Abstract
In 1927 Suramérica by Pablo de Rokha appears. Avant-garde, self-published and immersed in the copious work of its author, this poem will be relegated and will be little read and studied both by critics and by Chilean and Latin American poetry. After this stage of formal experimentation, de Rokha will build, without much success, a public persona of an (American) poet with greater anchorage in his journalistic interventions, in the gesture and in the reference of his works in the following decades. This process will always take place in opposition to and emulation of the figure of Pablo Neruda, who will achieve the coveted label of the American poet. This contest of figures resumed, politically, that already disputed by Rubén Darío and Enrique Rodó over the voice of the continent and would be settled, in this case, at a literary level, in the poetic production of each Chilean. The following work sets out to return to Suramérica and analyze not only its importance in the controversy over “the American poet” but the existing link that this neglected poem shows between the work of Pablo de Rokha and the American essence, no longer from a referential or declarative perspective but assuming the language/poem as a totality liable to become “American”.
