Abstract
We propose an approach to hair work in 19th-century Argentina. Following sources of the period, we will see the circulation of this practice in different so-cial classes, and its role in mourning rituals. Following ideas from the Material Culture of Emotions and the Anthropology of Art, we will analyze the work of the Afro-Porteño painter Rosendo Mendizabal who excelled in the execution of hair work pieces. Exploring the iconography and materiality of his work will allow us to find new theoretical categories to continue unraveling its uniqueness.
