Abstract

The wind tunnel is a frequently used tool for studying the aerodynamics of shaft-mounted models. It also illustrates fundamental principles of fluid mechanics applied to engineering design. An important technique for understanding complex flow fields in this environment is the visualization of streamlines. It reveals details such as the flow separation - boundary layer separation, the formation of vortices and the wake pattern.

This paper describes the experience of the authors in the design and testing of a smoke rake system for the instrumentation of an open subsonic wind tunnel at the Centro Atomico Constituyentes.

The visualization system was configured to obtain continuous lines from smoke injection. A stroboscopic light was developed by the group to improve visibility, and the exit of the system inside the tunnel was designed as a rake. The system was tested with different models of Savonius wind turbines and 3D-printed horizontal-axis turbine wing profiles in different materials.
