Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the teaching of descriptive statistics in Veterinary Science students
Abstract
This article presents a case study focused on the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), specifically the Wooclap platform, into the teaching of descriptive statistics at the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. The study addresses the challenge of teaching biostatistics, given the complexity of its concepts and their application in veterinary practice. One common problem identified among students is a lack of motivation, which often leads to rote learning. It is considered that the integration of ICT tools, such as Wooclap, can offer an effective solution by providing a more dynamic, interactive, and participatory learning environment. To evaluate the impact of this integration, an anonymous post-class survey was used to evaluate students’ perceptions of the contribution and effectiveness of the technology employed. The results revealed that a vast majority of students found the tool highly beneficial, reporting significant improvements in their learning experience. Students highlighted increased engagement and participation during the class, suggesting that the use of ICT can positively impact the teaching of complex subjects like biostatistics. In light of these results, the study concludes that the strategic integration of ICT has the potential to significantly transform and enhance the teaching-learning process in veterinary statistical education.
