Abstract

The following paper aims to adress the relationship between social policies and inequality in contemporary Argentina. To do this, it analizes in two parallel and interconnected dimensions. The first one refers to the place of social policies as an instrument of social reproduction and the way in which they are inserted in a series of social reproduction strategies of families to sustain or improve their own position in the space of social classes. The second refers to how social policies (and more precisely, the so-called “social plans”) become part of a common stock of symbolic categories that are put into play in the construction of symbolic boundaries that distinguish legitimacies, dignities and differential prestige between people. To this end, the text proposes an articulation of methods, combining multifactorial statistical processing of databases such as the ENES-PISAC, with extensive qualitative field work ranging from in-depth interviews to ethnographic records.
