Abstract
This article, soon to appear in the second edition of the Oxford Handbook of the Welfare State, presents a comprehensive review of diverse academic fields to assess the relationships between gender and Welfare States in high-income democracies. The proposed analysis starts by dealing with the earliest and best-known feminist academic studies and concludes by putting forward the current thoughts and debates on the position of social policies in a new context, while addressing the complex relation between gender, paid employment and care work.
