INFRAESTRUTURA NA METROPOLIZAÇÃO DO ESPAÇO: PRIVATIZAÇÃO DA REDE METROVIÁRIA NA METAMORFOSE URBANA DE SÃO PAULO

Abstract

This article situates the understanding of urban infrastructures within the broad changes in the production of space in Latin American metropolises in the 21st century. It seeks to highlight the processes of infrastructure privatisation in the context of spatial metropolisation and to renew the connection between urban studies and infrastructure studies. We support the hypothesis that metropolisation induces a true urban metamorphosis, wherein infrastructures have functioned as a significant general condition for capitalisation, by enabling the expansion of rent capture through spatial differentiation and the privatisation processes that forge new forms of property. We discuss this hypothesis with reference to the metropolis of São Paulo and the development of its metro system.
