Abstract

In Argentina, during the presidency of Arturo Illia (1963-1966), the National Campaign for Literacy and Adult Education (CNAEA) was promoted, one of the first educational policies for this population fostered by the national State.

This paper deals with the implementation of the Campaign in the province of Chaco, (northeastern Argentina). To this end, the design of the literacy policy at the national level is first considered, this includes the diagnosis, planning, objectives and the established organizational chart. Secondly, at the provincial level, the creation of the Board of Directors of the Literacy Program is addressed, which was responsible for the implementation of the Campaign in Chaco, emphasizing its organizational structure and main actions. Based on this, it focuses on the characteristics assumed by the literacy centers, the target adults and the teaching staff.

Methodologically, this is a historical-educational study that is based on the analysis of primary sources, located in different repositories, such as the National Library of Teachers (BNM) and the Historical Archive of the Province of Chaco (AHPCh).
